First, talk to your doctor. There are a number of treatments that can help you manage the symptoms of IBD. Most of these treatments work by calming down the inflammation produced by the malfunctioning immune system, and others can help clear any infections that have taken hold. Research for better medication is still ongoing, resulting in new future options for treatment.

The timing of flare-ups can be unpredictable. But since flare-ups can be triggered by a variety of things, such as certain foods, drinks, stress etc., it is important that you learn what your triggers are so that you can avoid them. Most people who have IBD can manage their condition well by avoiding triggers, whilst following their treatment as prescribed by their doctor.
